An Uneven Playground
I call this digital space an Uneven Playground, borrowing a phrase that Milica Ilić, an International Adviser at Onda, the French office for contemporary performing arts circulation, and a coordinator of RESHAPE, mentioned during our interview for the purposes of the research of my masters thesis. It is a phrase that resonates on many levels.
In her words:
‘’As an artist coming from Greece, let's say, or from Southern Mediterranean or from Spain, you come into a very uneven playground. You come into a playground, which is transnational, which is global, but it's uneven and so you will not stand a chance next to or you will have much less opportunity than an artist that is based in some of the ‘power countries’. You know, as a French artist, you will get far more support, far more frameworks, and far more opportunities than an artist from Greece. I mean, you know that better than I do. And so as a Greek artist, this is the playground. This is your playground.’’ (Ilić, 2023)
